💡 Recommended: print on card stock (200gsm), laminate with a 125-micron pouch, punch a hole and thread onto your JLK lanyard. Keep in your apron pocket. Every JLK site should stock a small pile of laminated pocket cards for new starters.
🛡 SAFEGUARDING

The Four Rs

If in doubt — go to your DSL. Never sit on a concern.

R1 · Recognise

  1. Watch for change in behaviour, appearance, mood.
  2. Listen for the disclosure — even one sentence.
  3. Notice bruises, marks, distress.

R2 · Respond

  1. Stay calm. Believe them.
  2. DON'T interrupt or lead questions.
  3. DON'T promise confidentiality.

R3 · Record

  1. Same day. Facts only. Child's words.
  2. Time, place, who was there.
  3. Sign and date.

R4 · Refer

  1. Straight to the DSL — same shift.
  2. DSL logs and decides referral.
  3. You are done — do not follow up alone.

  3. Airway — tilt head back gently
  4. Breathing — 10 sec look, listen, feel
  5. CPR — 5 rescue breaths, then 30:2

Choking (child & infant)

  1. 5 back blows between shoulder blades
  2. 5 chest thrusts (infant) or abdominal thrusts (child)

💜 BEHAVIOUR

Behaviour IS communication

Before you manage the behaviour, find out what it's telling you.

The JLK pause

  1. Kneel to their eye level.
  2. Name what you see: "You look upset."
  3. Wait. Don't fill the silence.
  4. Ask: "What's happening?"

Look for the FIVE causes

  • Hunger, tiredness, thirst
  • Sensory overload / under-load
  • Big feeling with no words yet
  • Transition or change (visible or not)
  • Something at home

NEVER

Shame · shout · isolate · label the child as "naughty"

REPAIR after every rupture

A hug, a knee-down, a "we're OK" — the return is what teaches regulation.
