Why this masterclass exists
Too much early years training is either abstract theory or activity ideas without a why. This masterclass sits deliberately in the middle: it takes each area of the EYFS, unpacks what strong practice actually looks like in a JLK room, and gives you a repeatable model for turning your observations of a child into a meaningful next step. The end goal is that every JLK practitioner — regardless of experience — can look at a moment of play and answer three questions confidently: what is happening here, what does this child need next, and how do I plan for that intentionally.
The 12 modules
Progress through in order, or dip into whichever module answers today's question. Each module has scenario, reflection, a knowledge check and a practical task. The final assessment (Module 12) pulls it all together.

What Is the EYFS and Why Does It Matter?
Statutory framework vs Development Matters · prime and specific areas · why statements guide judgement, not tick-boxes.
ModuleThe 7 Areas of Learning
Deep-dive on each area — what it means, strong vs tokenistic practice, key adult moves, play that supports it naturally.
ModuleUnderstanding the Age Bands

Linking EYFS Statements to Play
A step-by-step method for watching a child and identifying which EYFS statements the play is genuinely meeting.

How one strong activity meets multiple EYFS statements across areas — meaningfully, not tokenistically.

Planning Outstanding Meaningful Activities
The JLK Meaningful Activity Planning Model — ten steps from child to next step, with the full planning template.

Observation, Assessment and Next Steps
Meaningful observation, not tick-boxes. Turning a moment into a written note into a next step.

JLK's “behaviour is communication” approach applied to planning, environment and adult role for every child.
ModuleStatement Mapping Tool
A practical browsing tool for the EYFS statements — pick age band + area + statement and see suggested activities, cross-links and next steps.
ModuleFinal Assessment & Certification
Plan a meaningful activity from statement to next step, with cross-links, adult role and JLK-ethos reflection. Manager sign-off.
ModuleWhat you'll be able to do afterwards
- Look at a moment of play and name confidently which EYFS statements it is meeting.
- Plan an activity that starts with a child (not a Pinterest board), links to a specific statement, and includes intentional next steps.
- Cross-reference one activity across multiple areas — meaningfully, not by forcing links.
- Set up your room and garden as continuous provision that invites communication, exploration, independence and progression.
- Write an observation that's useful rather than tick-box — and turn it into a next step.
- Adapt every planned activity for children with SEND, EAL, or emotional regulation needs.
- Have the confident, evidence-anchored EYFS conversation with a parent, a manager, or an inspector.
