🎓 EYFS Masterclass · Module 12 of 12 · ~40 min + submission

Final Assessment & Certification

Bring it all together. Plan a meaningful activity from statement to next step, apply cross-links honestly, name the adult moves, describe the environment, and reflect on the JLK ethos. Manager sign-off completes your Masterclass certification.

Section 1

Before you start

~3 min

The Final Assessment is not a quiz. It's a piece of practice you produce, submit, and defend in a short conversation with your manager. It's designed to test what all 11 previous modules together should have built: your practice, not your recall.

You should have completed:

  • Modules 1–10 (all quizzes passed at 80%+)
  • Module 11 — used the Statement Mapping Tool for a real child
  • Module 9 observation task submitted for manager sign-off

💡 JLK principle: the aim of certification is not to prove you know the EYFS. It's to demonstrate that your daily practice is EYFS-informed — that the child in front of you is being seen, planned for, and stretched.

The submission

Plan & deliver a meaningful activity for a real child

~30 min plan · 1 session deliver

Pick one child in your key group. Design and deliver one activity for them (or a small group including them) using everything the Masterclass has taught you.

Your submission must include ALL of the following sections. Bring it as a single document (typed or handwritten) to your final review meeting with your manager.

  1. Child snapshot — initials, age (years & months), current age band, a two-sentence pen-portrait (what they love, what they're working on).
  2. The starting observation — what did you notice in the last week that told you this activity was the right next step? Cite the observation specifically.
  3. The ONE strongest EYFS statement link — word-for-word from Development Matters, with age band and area named.
  4. Honest cross-links (max 3) — each quoted in its original wording, each with a named adult move. Apply the JLK two-test rule.
  5. Adult role — name specifically when you'll tune in, when you'll narrate, when you'll pause, and when you'll step back. Include one thing you will DELIBERATELY NOT do.
  6. Environment & resources — what did you put out, where, and why? What did you take away or hide to focus the play?
  7. Inclusion & adaptation — if the child has SEND, EAL, sensory or emotional needs, what adjustments did you make at the environment / adult role / resource level? If not, name one child in your room the activity would need to be adapted for.
  8. What happened — 5–8 sentences of specific, factual observation of what actually happened. The child's own words quoted directly, if any.
  9. Next step — using the JLK formula: action + for this child + timeframe + what you'll look for.
  10. JLK ethos reflection (~200 words) — how did you hold to at least THREE of: behaviour as communication, calm and consistent adult presence, high expectations without pushing, meaningful play (not entertainment), inclusive access, emotional awareness, development-focused planning?
Section 3

How your manager will assess it

~2 min

Your manager reviews your submission against the JLK Masterclass rubric. There are four grades: Pass, Pass with distinction, Refer for revision, Fail.

Pass criteria — ALL of the following must be true:

  • EYFS statement is verbatim, not paraphrased, with age band + area named.
  • Cross-links pass the JLK evidence + intention tests.
  • Every linked statement has a specific adult move named.
  • The activity is developmentally appropriate for the child (not pushed, not too easy).
  • “What happened” is specific and factual, not vague.
  • Next step follows the JLK formula.
  • Ethos reflection genuinely references JLK principles — not generic phrases.

Distinction adds: evidence of deep listening to the child, unusually thoughtful adult moves, honest self-reflection on what you'd do differently.

Refer for revision: good foundation, but one or more sections need strengthening — your manager will name which and set a date to resubmit.

Fail: statements paraphrased, no evidence of practice, or the activity is unsafe/inappropriate. Extremely rare — requires you to re-take the earlier modules.

Section 4

The Masterclass conversation

~15 min in person

After your submission is read, your manager will book a short conversation (10–15 min) with you. This is not a defence — it's a professional conversation. Expect three kinds of questions:

1. Understanding questions. “Talk me through why you picked that statement.” / “What made this the right next step?”

2. Stretch questions. “What if the child hadn't engaged at all — what was your fallback?” / “How would you adapt this for a child with EAL?”

3. Ethos questions. “What does 'behaviour as communication' mean to you in your room?” / “When have you held a boundary calmly this week?”

Come prepared to talk about YOUR practice, not the EYFS in the abstract. Bring your notes.

Certification

Your JLK EYFS Masterclass certificate

On completion

Once your manager signs off your submission at Pass or Distinction:

  • Your Masterclass status flips to Complete in the Academy dashboard.
  • Your certificate is generated on your My CPD page — downloadable as PDF.
  • Your CPD record shows the full ~4 hours of learning across the 12 modules.
  • You are recognised as JLK EYFS Masterclass qualified — a prerequisite for progression to Silver+ and above in the JLK career pathway.
  • You are eligible to mentor another staff member through the Masterclass.

💡 The Masterclass is renewable every 24 months — not because you forget, but because Development Matters is revised and JLK's practice evolves. Renewal is a shorter reflection, not a re-do.

🌱 Congratulations

Completing this Masterclass means your practice is deeply EYFS-informed and JLK-shaped. The child in front of you is being seen, planned for, and stretched. That is the whole point.
