CCTV
JLK does not operate CCTV. Safeguarding is maintained through routine, ratios, DBS-enhanced staff, safeguarding refreshed annually, locked doors, two-adult practice, and daily records anyone can review.
🛡 Single Central Record (SCR)
Live view of every active staff member's safeguarding-critical checks. Loaded from the private JLK Staff Registry sheet + SCR extension. Empty cells = data pending entry (not necessarily missing).

JLK DBS policy — how we handle renewals
Every JLK staff member gets an enhanced DBS check on hire. On issue of the certificate, they have a 14-day window to sign up for the DBS Update Service (£16/year, paid by JLK where appropriate). We strongly encourage all staff to sign up.
- On Update Service: DBS stays current indefinitely, checked annually against the register. Certificate number kept on file.
- NOT on Update Service: new DBS certificate re-obtained every 3 years. Certificate number kept on file for continuity.
- The DBS status column above reflects this — staff on the Update Service show as "In date" indefinitely; staff off the service show a countdown against the 3-year window.
Data entry: add SCR values in the SCR management page. Live data flows here on refresh.
👶 Baby provision at Bromley — our position
EYFS 3.87 says there should be a separate baby room for under-twos. Bromley is one open mixed-age space. This is the answer to that question, agreed in advance rather than improvised.
What the framework says
- "There should be a separate baby room for children under the age of two."
- "However, providers must ensure that children in a baby room have contact with older children and are moved into the older age group when appropriate."
The first sentence is "should". The second is "must", and it is the one an open-plan setting meets most easily. Both halves belong in the answer.
Our position at Bromley
- Croydon and Lewisham both have separate rooms. Croydon has seven; Lewisham has two, Tadpoles up to 2 and Frogs from 2. Bromley is the only site this question applies to.
- Bromley has a defined, protected baby area within the single space, with its own staff, its own floor space and its own sleep arrangements — not a corner that moves depending on the day. [CONFIRM: describe the zoning and where the boundary physically is.]
- The "must" half is met by design, not by effort. Babies at Bromley have contact with older children every day as a matter of course, and move on in stages rather than being moved to a different room on a date. That is the outcome 3.87 asks for.
- Sleep is the part parents and inspectors ask about first. Our safer sleep arrangements at Bromley meet 3.86 in full — see the Safer Sleep Policy. Under-sixes have an adult in the room for every sleep, and all children are within sight and hearing. [CONFIRM: where babies sleep at Bromley and how the area is kept quiet.]
- What we do not claim. We do not say Bromley has a separate baby room, because it does not. We say what we have instead and why it works for the children in it.
⚠️ Still to do
- Fill in the two [CONFIRM] points above with what is actually true at Bromley today.
- Consider whether a short written risk assessment of the mixed-age space would strengthen this. It would be the obvious thing to hand over when asked, and we do not have one.
👶 Individual care plans
Every enrolled child + every pre-tour family has a care plan on file — allergies, medical needs, SEND, cultural + language needs, routines, comfort object. Built from what the family submitted; used by the keyworker from day one.
What to show an inspector: open the library, use the site filter to show just this setting, hover a warning badge for detail, click Open on any row to view the full care plan doc. Evidence that every child has an individual plan, not a generic template.
🎓 Training records at a glance
Pulled live from the JLK Training Records sheet. Full detail on manager dashboard.
👥 Peer observation programme
Every two weeks, practitioners at each site are paired at random to shadow each other for 20 minutes against a shared focus, then debrief. It is learning from each other, not appraisal. Directors are not paired. Each person writes a private debrief; leaders see who is paired and whether both have debriefed — never what they wrote, which is what keeps the reflections honest.

Focus areas rotate: transitions, the JLK voice, play and curiosity, handovers, behaviour moments, room set-up, and what counts as an observation.
🔍 QA audit history
Internal quality-assurance audits: L1 weekly · L2 monthly · L3 termly. Full engine at QA hub.
🚨 Incident log
Accidents, safeguarding referrals, and complaints. All incidents captured with timestamp, staff involved, resolution, and (where required) RIDDOR/LADO reporting.

🧸 Raising concerns about a child
How any member of staff records a worry about a child, who it reaches, and how quickly it is picked up. Numbers only: individual records are held by the DSL and SENCo and shown on request.
🛡 Safeguarding: cause for concern
- Any member of staff can record one, including apprentices and bank staff. The person who notices is often the newest in the room.
- Tell the DSL in person first. The form records the concern; it does not replace reporting it. Every screen of the form says so.
- It records the child's own words exactly, when and where it happened, any marks on a body map, what was done at the time, and who was told.
- The DSL and deputy and the site manager are notified straight away. The full detail goes only to JLK mailboxes, never to Discord or a personal inbox.
- The time the DSL first opens and marks a concern as seen is written once and never changes, followed by a dated log of every action, referral and closure.
- If it involves a member of staff, it goes to the DSL and the directors only, and is handled under the allegations procedure. If it involves the DSL, it goes to the directors only. Those records are not shown to site managers and are not counted in the figures below.
🌱 SEND: something noticed about a child's development
- Any member of staff can raise one, straight from the EYFS matrix statement they were looking at.
- It asks how long the concern has been there, what has been tried, and whether the family is aware.
- The SENCo and the site manager are notified. The child is identified by first name and initial only.
- Each concern moves through new → watching → talked to family → referred → closed, with every step dated and named.
The blank forms: Safeguarding cause for concern · SEND concern. Full records: the safeguarding log (DSL and leadership) and the SEND concerns log (SENCo and managers).
🔥 Fire drill / evacuation log
Each site runs a fire drill every term (min 3/year). Log includes time-to-evacuate, staff on shift, children evacuated, evacuation cot used (baby room), issues + resolution.
Assembly points
- Croydon: front car park
- Lewisham: on the green at the back of the centre
- Bromley: car park
- Baby evacuation method: evacuation cot at every site

✅ Daily site checks and visitors
Opening, safety and closing checks are done on each nursery's tablet every day. Anything that fails, and any room, sleep room or fridge temperature out of range, goes to the site manager straight away and stays open until a manager records what was done. The same fault reported three times goes to the directors.
- Temperatures are checked against our policies: baby rooms at least 18°C and other rooms at least 16°C (Safety Checks policy), sleep rooms 16–20°C (Safer Sleep policy), and fridges 5°C or below, recorded morning and night.
- Every visitor is signed in by a member of staff who has checked their ID. The type of ID is recorded, never the number. A visitor with no ID is reported to the manager.
- Visitors who are signed in appear on the fire list until they sign out, and the closing check flags anyone still in.

🌱 Curriculum & JLK Academy
EYFS-aligned curriculum plus JLK Academy — our in-house CPD platform (104 courses, 6 academies) launched to team 2026-07-13. Every staff member is on a personal CPD pathway.
Approach
- Play-rich environments indoors and outdoors with continuous provision that children can choose from.
- Key Person planning — staff observe, notice interests, and plan next steps matched to each child.
- Small-group experiences — stories, songs, maths moments, phonological awareness, fine-motor play.
- Real-world projects — nature walks, cooking, role play, mark-making, construction and creative arts.
- Routines that teach — self-care, turn-taking, mealtimes, tidy-up time and calm transitions.
Key person policy
Key person is matched after 2–3 weeks of attending, once the team has observed who the child naturally connects with. Rationale: observation-based matching produces stronger bonds than random assignment.
